Biography

For eight years I worked as a Research Associate within the Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health and Research Care (CLAHRC South Yorkshire and CLAHRC Yorkshire and Humber). Within this role I worked on the SMART (Self-Management supported by Assistive, Rehabilitation and Telehealth technologies) project which investigated the potential to use technology in Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) self-management. This involved close liaison with Breathe Easy support groups and NHS Trusts across South Yorkshire. We developed an ‘app’ which could help people with COPD to increase their physical activity, and we evaluated its acceptability and usefulness in a feasibility study with patients and healthcare professionals. I was also involved in the Pitch In project, which investigated the views of people with mental health conditions, healthcare professionals, and industry professionals on the use of the ‘Internet of Things’ to help people manage mental health conditions.

Prior to this I managed a pilot RCT investigating whether a telemonitoring system could improve quality of life and decrease hospitalisations in COPD patients. I was also involved in research evaluating the use of a portable monitoring device to aid weight loss and HbA1c control in Type 2 Diabetes. In addition I established and managed a project looking into users’ views of telecare and specifically the reasons why people may or may not decide to use it. This involved liaising with Sheffield City Council, City Wide Care Alarms and many voluntary / third sector organisations. The results informed SCC / CWCA’s business and marketing strategy.
Most recently I have been managing an RCT investigating use of stem cell transplantation to improve symptoms in refractory Crohn’s disease.

Research Interests

I have a general interest in people’s self-management of their health, especially self-management of long-term health conditions. I am particularly interested in the relationship between physical and mental health.

Teaching

I am deputy lead of the Contemporary Health Psychology and Behaviour Change Masters module, and am a Personal Tutor for several Masters students.

I have been involved in a number of teaching projects over the years, including establishing and running an ILA Masterclass for a number of years which introduced medical undergraduates to telehealth and telecare. I also lead workshops and lectures with nursing and allied health professional undergraduates at Sheffield Hallam University on the same topic.

Current Projects

• ASTIClite randomised controlled trial of stem cell transplantation in refractory Crohn’s disease
• SMART COPD development work and feasibility study
• Pitch In: Use of Internet of Things to support people with mental health conditions
