    Pleasant Study

    The PLEASANT study is a cluster randomised controlled trial investigating the effect of a postal intervention, sent to parents/carers of school age asthmatic children during the summer holidays, in reducing unscheduled medical contacts in September following return to school.

    The study is being carried out by Professor Steven A Julious - Group Director of the Medical Statistics Group.

    £1.5 million Funding Award for Aphasia Research

    A research team based in the Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology group (RAT) and the Clinical Trials Research Unit (CTRU) have been awarded £1.5 million from the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment programme.  This is to carry out a randomised control trial investigating the clinical and cost-effectiveness of aphasia computer treatment long-term post-stroke.

    Ellen Lee, a medical statistician within the DTS section, was part of a team who won first prize in a national infographic competition from The British Library and Research Councils UK.

    3Mg Trial

    Judith Cohen and Mike Bradburn, along with the Chief Investigator Professor Steve Goodacre (Health Services Research) and other colleagues in ScHARR and elsewhere have recently been involved in the analysis and reporting of a randomised controlled trial (RCT) to evaluate the effectiveness of intravenous or nebulised magnesium sulphate versus placebo in adults with acute severe asthma.

    The Royal Statistical Society are holding their annual conference in Sheffield this year, from 1-4 September 2014.

    The Chair of the Programme committee is Mike Campbell, Chair of Medical Statistics in ScHARR and the Local Group member is Sara Hilditch, Head of the Sheffield Statistics Consulting Unit (SSU). This has involved a year of preparation, and is now almost ready.
