The University of Sheffield ADOPT Scheme

This two-year programme is for Year 12 students who are interested in a career in the field of dentistry, as a dentist, hygienist or therapist.

Our aim is to encourage students from backgrounds which are under-represented in higher education and provide support and guidance through a range of exciting activities and events.

We want to help them overcome the barriers that might discourage them from applying for a place at university. These barriers might be:

  • Young people who are the first generation of their immediate family to study at university.
  • Few young people from their area go to university
  • Personal circumstances make it more difficult for them to achieve their full potential to go to university

How the Scheme Works

Students who complete the two year programme will be guaranteed an interview for an appropriate course at the University of Sheffield School of Clinical Dentistry, subject to meeting minimum academic criteria upon application.

In their two years on the scheme, they'll see what it's like to work in dentistry, with the emphasis on hands-on activities and student interaction. They'll work with staff and students in the Dental School, and receive realistic personal advice about a career in dentistry.

Current undergraduate students from the Dental School tell you what studying at the University of Sheffield is really like.
