The new Discover programme films - helping your Year 12 students to apply
The online application process for our Post 16 Discover Programme is now open. We have responded to your feedback by creating two short guides for students on how to apply and which pathway to apply for.
Autumn is always an exciting time for the Post-16 Outreach Team, as it’s time to recruit 300 Year 12 students across our six Discover Programme pathways. But how can you help your students to decide if Discover is for them and which pathway to take?
Our new videos are here to help you. ‘What if’ focuses on the Discover Programme overall and describes the many benefits of taking part. ‘Pathway Choices’ explains the six different pathways, so that your students can weigh up their options. These short films can be used in assemblies, emailed to students or in whatever way works best for your school or college.
The Discover Programme gives students who meet specific academic and Widening Participation (WP) criteria an immersive experience of studying at the Number 1 Russell Group University for Student Experience. It encompasses subject workshops, study skills support and a residential summer school. All this alongside expert advice and guidance throughout Year 12 and 13 from our staff and student ambassadors. We help your students negotiate the UCAS process and show them how they can thrive in a university environment. If accepted onto the pathway your students will be eligible to receive an adjusted offer from the University of Sheffield of up to two grades lower than the standard offer.
The six different Discover Pathways can be categorised as either career focused experiences or a broader exploration of groups of subjects. For example, students applying to Discover Law will gain access to working environments such as Law Courts as well as Law workshops at the University whereas Discover STEM will give students an overview of the many different degree routes within Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths. Either way students will learn more about their chosen route or develop interests they didn’t know they had!
