China Now: Independent Visions

Chinese Film and documentary series
Date: 11th - 25th August
Location: Showroom Cinema, Sheffield
Cost: £2 per film

Some of the most exciting Chinese film and documentary of recent years comes from independent producers, rather than from the mainstream. Screenings of this work outside China have been rare, and screenings within China are restricted.

China Now was launched "to celebrate the daring spirit and creative innovation of independent filmmakers and festival organizers in mainland China", and we are delighted to bring three major films from their list to the Showroom Cinema, Sheffield.

The films are:

Cut Out the Eyes (dir. Xu Tong) Thursday, August 11, 18.30pm

The River of Life (dir. Yang Pingdao) Thursday, August 18, 18.30pm

Spark (dir. Hu Jie) Thursday, August 25, 18.30pm

There will be a short introduction for each film, and time for questions and discussion afterwards.

Priced at £2.00, are available from the Showroom Cinema website. For further details, see

These screenings are held in association with the School of East Asian Studies/White Rose East Asia Centre's AHRC-funded work on Memory in East Asia.
