Entry Requirements

For all our Taught Postgraduate degrees, our first requirement is a good first degree in any subject. This will normally mean a 2.1 from a university in the UK, or an equivalent qualification from an institution overseas. Applicants with other qualifications combined with relevant professional experience may also be eligible.

Entry requirements for EU/international students

English Language
If your first language is not English you will need to achieve an overall IELTS grade of 6.5 with a minimum of 6.0 in each component or an equivalent English language qualification.

Students who have taken an undergraduate degree at an English speaking institution are not required to take an IELTS test, however the School of East Asian Studies does not accept a Masters qualification from an English speaking institution in lieu of IELTS.

Common questions

Do I need to know Chinese, Japanese or Korean to take a Masters course?

You do not need to have prior knowledge of Chinese, Japanese or Korean in order to take one of our Masters courses.

Language classes are available on all our courses at a variety of levels from beginner to advanced but are not a compulsory component of the course
If you contact our admissions team with details of your language skills and qualifications, we can advise on appropriate language options and provide a placement test if necessary.

Many students planning to begin language study from scratch have taken `taster´ courses before arriving in Sheffield, which can be useful. We ask all students taking beginners´ Japanese to learn the two syllabi scripts, hiragana and katakana before arrival, as these will be used from the first day. (Recommended texts: Let's learn Hiragana ISBN 087011092, Let's Learn Katakana ISBN 087011719X, both published by Kodansha 1985).

Do you offer degree programmes suitable for native speakers of Chinese, Japanese or Korean?

All of our masters degrees are suitable to native speakers of Chinese, Japanese or Korean but they would not be able to take language classes in their native language.
