MA in Intercultural Communication

The programme is modular in format, having a unified core structure with three core modules and a dissertation, and options for differing pathways within the approved/option modules. Development of its learning outcomes is promoted through a variety of teaching and learning methods, including staff- and student-led seminars, small group work, one-on-one consulations with staff, and independent learning, and assessment methods include essay writing, project work and oral presentations.

In consultation with staff, students choose modules to design an academically coherent programme consistent with their own career aspirations and interests: Core modules introduce students to the key theoretical concepts and practical aspects related to Intercultural Communication, whereas optional modules allow students to follow professional and personal interests in specialised areas in greater depth. There are also many opportunities for you to sit in on (audit) modules in addition to those you are registered for; this means you don't have to miss anything!

To qualify for the award of MA in Intercultural Communication, students must accumulate 180 credits* over 12 months (full-time study) or 24 months (part-time study). Click on any module to have the full module description displayed below.

Core Modules

- to the value of 75 credits (take all three)

- to the value of 60 credits

*A student who does not satisfactorily complete a dissertation but who successfully completes 60 or 120 credits worth of non-dissertation project modules, is eligible for the award of Postgraduate Certificate (PG Cert) or Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) respectively.

Optional Modules

- to the value of 45 credits (choose two to three)

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the programme you will be able to:

  • Relate these theories to work-based situations and related fields of study;
  • Argue the case for adopting particular approaches in particular situations;
  • Develop independent research skills.
