BA Modern Languages & Cultures

At Sheffield, you can choose from degree programmes with one, two or three languages as part of the BA Modern Languages and Cultures or you could combine one or two languages on a Dual degree.

Course Structure Overview

In your first year, you can take any language from beginner’s level, and you can take French, German, Russian or Spanish post-A Level (or equivalent).

Each year you will study 120 credits. All students must take at least 40 credits in language and culture in the same language each year. Each year you will also have the option to choose 20 credits from those on offer in the wider University.

We have recommended pathways through the languages and modules to enable you to create combinations that work well together. However, our flexible approach means you are not constrained by those pathways and we’ll help you make the choices that are best for you.

Studying one language

If you are studying one language, you'll choose from French, German, Russian or Spanish.

Choose two languages

If you're studying two languages, you'll study at least 40 credits in one language and culture, and at least 40 credits in the second in your first and second year. Optional culture modules can be taken in either language or from school-wide modules or from those on offer in the wider University.

Studying three languages

If you choose three languages, you'll study 40 credits in each of two languages and cultures and at least 20 credits in a third language in your first year. The remaining 20 credits will be from one of your three languages, or from school-wide modules or from those on offer in the wider University. Thereafter, you will continue to study 40 credits in at least one languages and culture, and at least 20 credits in your second and third languages. Other modules can be taken in one of your three languages, from school-wide modules or from those on offer in the wider University.

Our dual degrees

The flexibility of our other degrees means you also have the option to study your chosen topic with either one or two of the languages we have on offer.

Modules for dual degrees will be selected from both departments. You will choose 60 credits from a combination of core and optional modules - visit the language pages above and the relevant pages of the other departments to see what is on offer.

Please bear in mind that there may be some conditions around which languages you can choose for certain topics. Take a look at the course description on our online prospectus for more information.
