For enquiries, please contact – iicd-om-operational@sheffield.ac.uk
I qualified from the University of Nottingham in 1987 and trained in gastroenterology in Nottingham, Stoke-on-Trent, Melbourne (Australia).
In Melbourne I studied gastric adaptation to the effects of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in human subjects, using some of the techniques learnt to continue the same on my return to Nottingham where I subsequently became a British Digestive Foundation research training (1994-6) investigating the processing of interleukin-1 in inflammatory bowel disease.
I was appointed Consultant Gastroenterologist in Sheffield in 1998.
The Sheffield Small Bowel Service which I run with colleagues based on the Clinical Investigation Unit is the largest centre in the UK and one of the largest in Europe. It has received awards for innovation, service delivery and patient care from the British Medical Journal, the British Society of Gastroenterology, the Health Service Journal, Medipex and Movetis.
I was the recipient of the Hopkins Endoscopy Medal in 2017 for contributions to the field of endoscopy.
- Research interests
-
My research interests are the roles of non-invasive technology, specifically capsule endoscopy, in the investigation of the gastrointestinal tract.
Capsule endoscopy is a first line modality for small bowel investigation and current projects address issues bowel preparation, the use of capsule endoscopes with two cameras at either end to improve lesion detection and the use of virtual reality to improve visualisation.
We are studying patient acceptability of different colonic imaging modalities to establish the role of colon capsule endoscopy as well as the use of panenteric capsule endoscopy.
Research into the use of capsule endoscopes in the upper gastrointestinal tract focusses on the use of magnetic control and automated lesion recognition in indications including dyspepsia, anaemia and acute upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
Current projects
- Patient acceptability of robot magnet-controlled upper gastrointestinal endoscopy.
- Handheld magnet controlled capsule endoscopy investigating anaemia and upper gastrointestinal bleeding.
- Upper gastrointestinal capsule endoscopy controlled with patient positional change.
- Virtual reality in capsule endoscopy.
- Gastric mapping of capsule endoscopy images.
- Patient acceptability of different colonic imaging modalities.
