The Athena SWAN charter recognises excellence in HE employment in the STEMM subjects; Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths and Medicine and specifically promotes gender equality.
The School of Nursing and Midwifery was successful in achieving a bronze award for its achievement and hard work promoting gender equality in April 2014. In order to achieve a bronze award, we have worked with colleagues to identify particular challenges, and have taken action to respond to these, which has had a demonstrable impact on the School.
The School was commended on its courses, which are delivered on a full-time and part-time basis, and have online and blended learning options, resulting in increased uptake from women with caring responsibilities and a greater than usual proportion of men.
The award is valid until Autumn 2018.
The University of Sheffield is a member of the charter, currently holding an Athena SWAN Bronze award which acknowledges our University-wide commitment to good practice in these areas. In order to extend this commitment to an equitable working environment, with over 23 departments across STEMM at the university going for individual awards.
