Financial Support for Family Caregivers

This research project explored what financial support is available for family caregivers of people who have a terminal illness or are approaching the end of life.

Our previous research has shown that family caregivers can face considerable financial costs when caring for someone approaching the end of life. These costs can include out of pocket expenses (parking, transport, changes to your home etc.), costs related to changes in the carers employment or education, and the cost of the time that is dedicated to caring. Whilst certain benefits and financial supports are available, it can be difficult to know what is available and how to apply.

Our most recent research compared financial support from across six different countries: UK, USA, Australia, New Zealand, Canada and Ireland. We found that whilst most countries have some support in place for carers, very little is directed specifically at end of life carers. We also found that applying for benefits and financial help can be so complex it puts many people off applying. Finally, it is often difficult to know what financial help and support is available, whether or not you might be eligible, and how to go about applying.

To help end of life carers from the UK we have created this resource which provides details of the financial support, welfare and benefits that are available, with details of how to apply.
