Thesis title / scope of research

"A video ethnography of undergraduate x-ray image interpretation training in radiology and radiography across non-clinical settings "

The learning of x-ray image interpretation is not well understood. Despite x-ray being amongst the most routinized techniques in imaging practice, the lack of research into learning and interaction in undergraduate x-ray image interpretation training raises significant questions about professional roles/responsibilities, interpretive knowledge/skills and possibly patient safety.

My project explores the professionals’ role in training students to 'see' normal/abnormal in x-ray images (radiographs) and to 'interpret' these as classifications of trauma/disease. I am particularly interested in the construction of a specific type of 'radiological vision' in non-clinical settings. This includes the processes and strategies that professionals find useful or relevant in helping students to interpret x-ray images. My research draws largely on the work of Charles Goodwin, and Jean Lave and Etienne Wenger including the principles of social studies of imaging and visualisation practices at the intersection of science, technology studies (STS).
