Internationally Excellent Research Recognised in REF 2014
The Department of Sociological Studies’ excellence in research output has been recognised in the results of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF), announced today.
The results show that 79% of the Department’s research has been rigorously judged to be world-leading or internationally excellent. This ranks the Department in the top 10 amongst the Russell Group for research output, and top 15 in the discipline for world-leading/internationally excellent research.
The Department’s impact and environment has also been recognised as internationally excellent through this exercise. Several of the Department’s academics have received recognition of their research during the latest REF assessment period, including Professor Alan Walker’s ESRC Impact Champion of the Year Award in 2013. Dr Lorna Warren was named as runner-up for the Outstanding Impact in Society prize at the ESRC Celebrating Impact Awards 2014.
Paul Martin, Head of Department, said: “I am pleased to see the Department's world-class research recognised in the Research Excellence Framework results. We are proud that such a large proportion of the Department's research has been assessed as world-leading or internationally excellent.
"I would like to congratulate all of my academic and professional services colleagues on this achievement and am incredibly proud to lead such a vibrant and stimulating community of world-class scholars."
