By Ferry from Europe

P&O Ferries ( sail from Europoort (Rotterdam, The Netherlands) or Zeebrugge (Belgium) to Hull, from where it's a very straightforward 1.5 hours drive to Sheffield: from King Georges Dock in Hull, straight through Hull on the A63 which becomes M62, then M18, then M1, where it merges with the rest of the 'By Car from the north' description below.  There is also a regular bus service to/from King Georges Dock to Hull Railway Station, where you can get a train direct to Sheffield.  The train journey is around 1.5 hours.

If you travel by Ferry from Holland/West Germany/Belgium and share a car/cabin with 2 or more people it often works out cheaper (and much more fun/relaxing) than flying.
