Meet some of our undergraduate researchers
Urban Studies and Planning
I began my research journey through my participation in the Achieve More Level 2 programme. I participated in all three stages of the project, joining an interdisciplinary group of five students to form a research proposal on the topic of migration. We received a bursary to undertake research throughout the summer.
We presented our research findings at the closing ceremony of Achieve More Level 2 and at the Sheffield Undergraduate Research Conference organised in March. We also presented at the prestigious British Conference of Undergraduate Research in Bournemouth alongside students from all around the UK and abroad.
My research experiences have developed my skills ready for postgraduate study, and provided me with experiences that will enhance my CV when applying for graduate jobs.
Laura Robinson - Law
My undergraduate research was supported by SURE (Sheffield Undergradaute Research Experience). My placement was genuinely an incredible experience. I was able to work alongside leading academics on a project that could potentially have far reaching impact for women. Once the SURE placement finished I created a creative stop motion video to explain my project. This video went on to win the award for the Best Non-poster Dissemination. Furthermore, I was awarded the prize for Student Researcher of the Year, was honoured to have been asked to speak at the showcase to inspire future researchers, and have recently published a joint paper with my supervisor. The SURE scheme has developed me as a person and provided me with numerous opportunities.
Biochemistry and Molecular Cell Biology
My research project was part of the Think Ahead: SURE programme. It was a great experience that allowed me to develop research skills from the design and implementation of my own experiments, but also writing, team-working and presentation skills. I also gained experience of grant applications and collaboration with PhD students.
I disseminated my research through an academic poster and an oral presentation to a university audience. The experience I gained from my placement gave me more confidence when designing my final year project, and resulted in my poster dissemination being awarded. Taking part in the scheme also helped me to secure a PhD position in a highly competitive field.
Dannielle O'Loughlan - Bioengineering
My research was funded by the SURE scheme. It gave me the opportunity to familiarise myself with a laboratory setting before commencing my final year, improved my scientific writing, and through the workshops offered, I gained valuable knowledge of dissemination methods.
SURE allowed me to experience independent research and has enhanced my CV. After SURE, I was asked to assist with the Royal Society of Science Summer Exhibition. Without partaking in the SURE scheme I would never have had the opportunity to disseminate my research so widely. SURE reinforced my desire to conduct research and ultimately inspired me to embark upon a PhD.
