Immigration Health Surcharge

What is the Immigration Health Surcharge?

For any applications submitted on or after 6th April 2015, visa applicants are required to pay a charge to the NHS. The key points you need to know are:

• It will be paid by non-EEA nationals who apply to come to the UK to work, study or join family for a period of more than 6 months
• You will need to pay this in full at the time of your visa application and the charge will usually be paid online
• The charge is £150 a year for students (this will be for each year you will study on your course). If you are applying with dependants, each of your dependants will need to pay the charge too
• The amount payable will be based on the maximum period of time for which permission could be granted based on the course dates confirmed on your CAS (i.e the length of your course plus the wrap up period - please see here for more information)
• Where the maximum period includes part of a year, a pro-rata payment will be paid. Where this is for six months or less, the amount payable will be half the annual surcharge. Where the period is for more than six months, the full surcharge will be payable.

Example:

If you study a course from 22nd September 2015 to 29th September 2016, you should be granted a visa that expires on 29th January 2017. This would therefore be just over 16 months so the charge calculated should be £225 - £150 for the first 12 months and £75 for the other 4 months).

Do I need to pay the Immigration Health Surcharge?

Please see here. The UKVI's website at the link above tells you:

1) Who has to pay the surcharge and have an IHS reference number to use with their visa application,

2) Who does not have to pay the surcharge, but still needs to get an IHS reference number to use with their visa application, and

3) Who does not have to pay and also does not have to get an IHS reference number to use with their application. Please note that if you are applying for your visa from overseas AND the length of your visa (including Tier 4) will be 6 months or less, this applies to you. You will be charged for any NHS care you receive. Please see here for more information.

Please note that there have been a few problems with UKVI's IHS portal and the system is not always successful in calculating the correct amount of surcharge that you need to pay. If the calculation is incorrect, we have been advised that UKVI will give you the opportunity to correct the payment. Please check the e-mail address for the account that you provide to the IHS portal and your post regularly.

If UKVI require you to pay a further surcharge after you submit the application, they will contact you by e-mail and/or post. Please ensure that you make the payment before any given deadline.
