For PhD Students - Doctorate Extension Scheme
In April 2013, the Home Office introduced the Doctorate Extension Scheme for students who are completing PhD courses to apply for a visa which will allow them to work in the UK for a period of 12 months after the award date of their course. If you are interested in this scheme, it is a good idea to consult the Student Advice Centre just before the date that you will submit your thesis.
If your course requires ATAS clearance, you will need to submit an ATAS certificate that covers you to the end of your course and was issued 6 months or less before the date on which you submit your Doctorate Extension Scheme application. You may need to apply for ATAS again before applying under this scheme. The Foreign Commonwealth Office aim to decide ATAS applications within 20 working days. Please make sure apply in enough time to receive your ATAS clearance before the date on which you need to make your Doctorate Extension Scheme application.
If you are interested in this scheme, please look at the Doctorate Extension Scheme information in our web pages and the Student Advice Centre Doctorate Extension Scheme Page for more information on whether you are eligible to apply under this scheme, how and when to apply, the conditions of the Doctorate Extension Scheme visa and the support available to you if you are making an application.
