The transition to life at university can be challenging and demanding, but it is also exciting and represents a great achievement which you should be proud of.
The experience is different for everyone:
- You might be the first in your family to go to university.
- You might be returning to education after some years.
- You might be the only one of your group of friends to be coming to Sheffield.
- You may be an Erasmus or Study Abroad student here for a short period of time.
- You might be coming from another country and wondering how you are going to react to all the new experiences in store for you.
Whatever background you arrive from, we want you to make the most of your first year at university and enjoy your time here.
You will probably have to manage many new situations and if you become a mentee your student mentor will help make your transition to university life as easy and enjoyable as possible.
Should you apply, your mentor will be a current undergraduate student who is studying in the same department as you and, if possible, on the same degree programme. They will either contact you by email or give you a call before you arrive, so you'll be able to ask any last minute questions you may have. When you get to Sheffield you will be able to meet up with your mentor.
You may want them to show you round the department you'll be studying in or to find out about the best events to go to in Intro Week – that bit´s up to you!
This is a fantastic opportunity to get an insight into what the year ahead will be like from someone who´s already been through their first year and wants to share their experiences and help you make the most of yours.
You can keep meeting with your mentor for as long as you find useful. If they also have other mentees you will get the chance to meet other people on your course before teaching starts.
But don't just take our word for it: read some of our recent mentee profiles and see what some of our current students have got from the Sheffield Mentors scheme.
You will be invited to apply for a mentor during your online pre-registration activities and join the community of students already benefiting from Sheffield Mentors.
