Orientation Week is a week of events and activities to help you find your way around Sheffield, meet other new students and adjust to life in the UK. The week is packed full of opportunities to meet new people, get useful information, sort out important tasks (like opening a bank account, or finding a place to live) and have fun!

Orientation is particularly useful for new international students because we know that moving to a new country always involves some additional challenges! However, starting university can be challenging for everyone, so if you thing that you would benefit from some additional support in adjusting to University life then you are welcome to join the programme.

We also run a Meet and Greet Service where our assistants will meet you at Manchester Airport and accompany you on coaches to Sheffield. More information on this will be available at a later date.

When?

Orientation Week takes place in September during the week before Intro Week. You can arrive and start taking part on any day during the week to start taking part in our activities. Please note that Orientation Week is not compulsory but is strongly advised for students who feel they would benefit from getting to know the University and the city before the majority of students arrive in Sheffield.

We run most of the important information sessions multiple times in the week, so you will not miss out on these no matter what day you arrive. However, some social events only take place once so you might miss out on some of those if you arrive later in the week.

What?

The week includes a huge range of events and activities, including:

  • Tours of the campus and the Students' Union
  • Walks around the local area
  • Talks from University services about the support available to students
  • Workshops to help with things like academic study skills, managing your money and understanding British culture.Talks about immigration and University registration procedures.
  • LOTS of social events where you can meet other new students, including quiz nights, barbecues, karaoke, games and craft evenings, a club night, cinema, ceilidhs (traditional dancing), sports sessions and more!

There will be a small registration fee of £5 to take part in Orientation Week, which will give you access to all of the information sessions and tours, and the majority of social events. Some social events include food, and these will require you to buy a ticket if you want to attend.

Meals are not included in the programme so you will need to pay for your own food during the week, and if you need accommodation for the week, you will need to book and pay for this separately.

Accommodation?

You do not need to stay in Orientation accommodation to take part in Orientation Week, so if you have your own private accommodation in Sheffield, or would rather stay in a hotel, you can still take part!

If you do need accommodation for the time you are attending Orientation, University accommodation will be available. We have different prices depending on what date you intend to arrive in Sheffield. These will be announced at a later date.

You will need to book and pay for Orientation Week accommodation in advance

All accommodation packages run through to the morning of Friday 15th September, when you will need to move to your permanent accommodation.

If you are moving into University accommodation for the rest of the semester/year, you will be able to move into your room on Friday 15th September even if this is earlier than the date stated on your accommodation contract. Please note this is only for Orientation Week participants staying in University accommodation during Orientation Week.

If you are not staying in University accommodation during Orientation Week you will not be permitted to move into your accommodation any earlier than the date stated on your contract.

If you would prefer to stay in a single sex apartment, please choose this option when booking.

I want to take part - what do I need to do now?

Registration for Orientation 2018 will be open in later in the year.
