Worried about a friend?

Should you ever be concerned about the welfare of someone you know then the University can help with information, guidance and advice.

I am parent/guardian worried about a student, how can you help?

You can contact us 0114 2224321 (during office hours Mon-Fri 9am until 5pm). Because of the Data Protection Act they cannot discuss an individual's situation/circumstance but we can contact the student to offer support if it is appropriate to do so.

If you are worried about your friend or you want to talk to someone about the impact that supporting your friend is having on you then Nightline can offer a confidential listening service.

What should I do if I am worried about the physical health of someone I know?

The can offer support and information about problems your friend may be experiencing. If you are in University accommodation then your Residential Mentor can act as a good confidant.

What should I do if I am worried about the emotional/mental health of someone I know?

The University Counselling Service can offer support and information about problems your friend may be experiencing. They can also offer practical information or links to outside organisations that you may wish to pass on to your friend or follow up for yourself. The Student Advice Centre can also offer information and guidance. If you are in University accommodation then your Residential Mentor can act as a good confidant.

Someone I know has been involved in a critical incident, what should I do?

In a crisis situation, ensuring your own safety and that of others is the most important thing. If the incident is happening now contact University Security on

If the incident has already occured and you, or the person you know, need further support in the aftermath of the incident then contact the Central Welfare and Guidance Team in Student Support & Guidance on 0114 2224321 (during office hours Mon-Fri 9am until 5pm).
