How We Have Helped

Here are some examples of students we have helped.

Peter

came to The University of Sheffield after doing better than expected with his A levels. He was been brought up in foster care for most of his life and had no experience of what University might be like. He found it useful to have a designated support contact who could help explain how the University worked and provide support and advice. He also received help accessing 52 week accommodation and received a Care Leaver bursary

Sarah

was 25 when she came to Sheffield University. She spent much of her childhood as a looked after child mainly with Rotherham Council residential care. When she started University she continued to live in her flat in Rotherham and commute to University. Friendly support and advice was available when she felt she needed it. Sarah also received a University Care Leaver bursary.

Taz

has been brought up by his grandparents as his mum was unable to look after him when he was growing up due to her addiction problems. He received a University Care Leaver bursary when he entered The University of Sheffield. He found it really useful to have a network of support available, particularly when he decided to switch courses after his first year.

University care leaver bursaries are paid on top of any Student Finance loan and grants entitlement and can be in addition to any care leaver grants from individual Local Authorities.

Having read the case studies, if you think match the criteria of a Care Leaver or you are unsure about your Care Leaver status please get in touch with our designated support contact for a confidential chat:
