Foundation Pathway

The Foundation Pathway is designed for staff new to teaching, particularly Graduate Teaching Assistants, who want to develop their practice and work towards recognition as Associate Fellow of the HEA (AFHEA). It is also open to all staff involved in teaching.

What does it involve?

The Foundation Pathway involves:

  • Attending two core workshops (the Foundation Pathway Orientation Workshop and Teaching: Design & Delivery) and two optional workshops from the Sheffield Teaching Assistant series of workshops
  • Completing four teaching observations - two where you are the teacher, and two where you are observing others teaching
  • Setting out your Developing Teaching Philosophy
  • Mapping your practice to Descriptor 1 of the UKPSF

Your work for the Foundation Pathway must be based on teaching here at the University of Sheffield.

What do I need to do next?

If you are interested in participating in the Foundation Pathway, please come to a Foundation Pathway Orientation workshop. You can book onto the Orientation workshop, as well as the other workshops required, via the University's Learning Management System (LMS).

I already have a lot of teaching experience. Is this for me?

If you have previous teaching experience at the University (and potentially from a previous role), you may prefer to apply for recognition via the Personal Pathway.
