The role of the personal tutor

Three people around a table in a discussion

This resource covers responsibilities and requirements and suggests some approaches to the personal tutoring role. It also covers topics to discuss at different stages of your student’s academic career, boundaries of the role, and links to other support available for students.

The personal tutor plays a fundamental part in the University's duty of care to its students. As a personal tutor, you will play a major role in helping students adjust to University life and getting the best experience possible from their time in Sheffield. Through regular meetings and by staying in touch, you will build a relationship with your tutees and offer mentoring and guidance on both academic and personal matters.
