Elevate Writing Retreats:
Thursday 25 and Friday 26 April 2019 (9:30-12:30)
Easter Vacation writing retreat to focus on teaching-related writing. This will be split over two mornings. If you have a teaching-related writing project that needs attention, an HEA application to be finished, or if you feel that students have taken priority over everything else recently then this is for you.

This session looks at what Pebblepad is and how it can be used, giving ideas for reflective tasks and assignments on a modular or programme level, and practical skills in creating workbooks for your students.
Getting Started with Turnitin and Feedback Studio

This session is intended as a introduction to the tool and how to perform some of the most common tasks. Whilst it serves as an introduction it will be beneficial for anybody who needs a refresher on using the system.

Assessing Reflection with PebblePad ATLAS

ATLAS is the area of PebblePad where learning and teaching activity takes place, allowing you to set assignments and provide feedback to your learners. This session looks at creating Workspaces, setting student work, grading and feedback, as well as demonstrating PebblePad’s reporting functions. Please note participants should have attended the Introduction to Reflective Learning PebblePad session, or have basic knowledge of using PebblePad.

Collaborative tools in MOLE for Learning & Teaching

Next Steps With MOLE

This session will look at taking your MOLE course further, exploring course design, assessment, and the embedding of media and external services. Its aim to provoke ideas of how a VLE can be used to increase engagement and learning opportunities, in ways that do not require technical skills, advanced software or large time commitments.

Elevate Learning & Teaching Mentoring Scheme 2018-19: Induction and skills session

The scheme is open to all staff who teach or support learning across the university, whether they are teaching-focussed, engaged in both teaching and research or in other services. It matches mentees with mentors from a different faculty, providing space for professional discussion outside of the usual work environment. The programme has a total expected time commitment of no more than 10 hours over the academic year and begins with a compulsory induction and skills workshop which prospective mentors and mentees attend together. Following the workshop, you can choose whether you want to sign up and if so as a mentor, mentee or both.

An Introduction to TurningPoint student polling solutions: making engagement with your students easy. The session focusses on sharing the TurningPoint student polling system, available to all staff at the University of Sheffield. The system allows for interactive engagement with your students, in a safe and secure polling environment, that can be run within or outside of PowerPoint. TurningPoint provides for a great degree of flexibility in choosing to run an anonymous session or the ability to track performance scores to individual students.

Learning from an international perspective

This session aims to raise awareness of some of the challenges that international students face in UK universities and offers their perspective on some issues such as lack of participation, plagiarism and reluctance to critically engage with course content. The Language of Feedback

This interactive session aims to raise awareness of how language can impact, both positively or negatively, on students’ perceptions of feedback and the way they engage with it. This event will showcase resources developed by USEA since that event to support engagement with external partners, as well as examples of external engagement in the curriculum from across the university.

In order to recognise the diverse and varied skills within a cohort of teaching staff, a team-teaching approach is gaining popularity within the University. This session will introduce some examples of successful team-teaching at both module and programme level, with contributions from Journalism, Psychology and the Interdisciplinary Programmes Office (Arts and Humanities). Following short presentations, participants will have time to ask questions and there will be time for discussion.
Making: A World of Enterprising Possibilities

Opportunities to get Sheffield making are currently being developed and explored by different groups across the University. In learning and teaching, our Faculty of Engineering has this year launched iForge, a student-owned and run makerspace. In research, work in the School of Education through the MakEY project is exploring learning through making in early years education. And our student and graduate entrepreneurs are using making to develop businesses - even inspiring young people into STEM in the process. We believe that by bringing together ideas from these different initiatives we can make even greater things happen. To get started, we want to get together like-minded individuals to share ideas. We want to explore how we can collaborate and create an effective space or spaces at the University of Sheffield. And we want to see how we can stimulate innovation and creativity, and create a place where people can feel at home, flourish, and grow through authentic, self-led learning, and by experimenting and taking risks in a safe environment.
Team teaching and interdisciplinary learning oppportunities

Team teaching provides a good way to include interdisciplinarity in learning and teaching activities. It allows for a range of approaches and expertise to be highlighted and shared. A panel of staff who teach on team-taught modules presented their perpectives on how this works for them and in what ways they ensure that the team provides a coherent learning experience for students at both undergraduate and postgraduate level.

Learning and Teaching Conference 2018
Innovative Curriculum Design: Taking a programme level approach to enhance student experience
Held on 9 January, 2018, the aim of this conference was to provide critical insights into the benefits, challenges and opportunities of adopting a programme level approach in practice to support student learning. As well as drawing on emerging findings from the institutional programme level view pilots and research around the role of the programme leader, it offered a space for colleagues from across the institution to share their own experiences of working at a programme level to enhance curriculum design.
