Supercar manufacturer McLaren Automotive opens facility next to the AMRC
Yesterday, Wednesday 14 November 2018, saw the opening of the new McLaren facility next to our AMRC. Our President and Vice-Chancellor Professor Koen Lamberts attended the opening. He said: “This new centre is a cause for celebration for our region, the North of England and the UK as a whole. We are proud that McLaren was attracted to our region by our AMRC's world-leading research, our investments in facilities and our established partnerships with industry. Just yards away from McLaren's new centre we also have the AMRC Training Centre, which is training McLaren's first degree apprentices in the Sheffield City Region.”
The San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment
We have recently signed the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA), which seeks to improve how scientific research is evaluated. DORA is a worldwide initiative, which can be supported by both individuals and institutions, funders and publishers. It recognises that the evaluation of scholarly and research outputs should be based on the merits of those individual outputs, rather than on journal-level metrics such as journal impact factor.
President and Vice-Chancellor to visit all University departments
As mentioned in his last update Professor Koen Lamberts will be visiting every department over the course of the next few months. These visits will be a great chance for him to hear from you and vice-versa. Arrangements are currently being made with heads of department.
Relationship agreement with the Students’ Union
Later this month we will sign the University and Students' Union Relationship Agreement which recognises our shared mission of delivering the very best education and experience for all our students.
Calling for a major change in the Government’s approach to international students
Last week we welcomed the cross-party parliamentary report calling for a major change in the government’s approach to international students. The report outlines 12 recommendations to restore the UK’s competitiveness in the international higher education sector. As a co-founder of the #WeAreInternational campaign, we recognise the vital contribution international students make and openly speak about the benefits of international scholarship.
This week is Self Care Week 2018
With our commitment to positive action surrounding mental health and wellbeing, this week we have been raising awareness of Self Care Week, 12-18 November, an annual national awareness week that focuses on embedding support for self care across communities.
Through Juice and Sport Sheffield we have been running a number of activities from mindfulness sessions to free fitness passes. There's still chance to sign up to the Back Care seminar on 21 November and the Introduction to Mindfulness session on 22 November
