Appointment of Director of Research Services
The University has appointed Deborah McClean as the Director of Research Services following an extensive recruitment process.
Deborah joined the University in 2005, having enjoyed a varied career in the private sector, including periods in travel, insurance and legal services, and manufacturing, in addition to living and working overseas including a year spent teaching English in Japan.
Deborah’s first role at the University was Financial Development Manager in the Research Office, leading the costings and pricing team, before gradually building her responsibilities to include research governance and ethics, contract negotiation, and finally REF management. She was seconded to Hefce for both the criteria and assessment stages of REF2014 as Panel advisor for Main panel C (Social Sciences) and associated sub panels, and was appointed Head of Operations and Assistant Director of Research and Innovation Services in 2013.
Since April 2017, Deborah has been fulfilling the Director of Research Services role on an interim basis. She has been highly effective in working with, and supporting the service.
Rob Sykes, Director of Academic Services, said: “I am extremely pleased that Deborah will continue to work with myself and Dave Petley. She has fulfilled the role highly successfully in an interim capacity for around a year and has now won through in a competitive, external recruitment process.”
