Big Walkers raise a final total of £80,000 in support of the Sheffield Scanner
The Big Walk has raised a final total of £80,000 towards the Sheffield Scanner campaign from more than 3,000 individual donations.
Thanks to our dedicated staff, students and alumni who took part, the funds raised take us one step closer towards bringing a revolutionary medical imaging facility to Yorkshire.
A total of 319 intrepid members of staff, students, alumni and friends of the University came together on 20 June 2018 to embark on the 26.2-mile marathon-distance walk.
Walkers made their way through breathtaking areas of the Peak District, including Stanage Edge, Derwent Edge and Low Bradfield. Together they covered over 8,500 miles – the equivalent of walking from Sheffield to Darwin in Northern Australia. Their final stop was the University Arms at the heart of campus, where they congregated for a well-earned celebratory barbecue.
This year’s Big Walk took place in support of the Sheffield Scanner campaign which aims to raise £2 million to fund a ground-breaking MRI-PET facility in the city. The new scanner will transform understanding of serious conditions, such as cancer, Alzheimer’s and Motor Neurone Disease. It will be the first of its kind in Yorkshire and one of only eight in the UK.
Thanks to generous donations – including those from Big Walkers and their supporters – the appeal total now stands at over £1.7 million.
Event organiser, David Meadows from the Development, Alumni Relations and Events said: “We’d like to say a huge thank you to everyone who took part in the Big Walk 2018. From the volunteers and marshals who helped out on the day, to the donors and supporters who gave so generously, it was a real team effort.
“Of course, a special thank you must go to the walkers. Without their commitment to fundraising and determination to complete the challenging distance, the event would not have happened and we’d never have been able to achieve this amazing total.
“But the fundraising doesn't stop. We are on the last leg to reaching our £2 million target and I look forward to supporting those taking part in the Sheffield 10k for the Sheffield Scanner in September.”
If you’re interested in fundraising for the Sheffield Scanner, there are lots of ways to get involved and add your support.
