Big Walk 2019 fundraising events

Not taking part in this year’s Big Walk but still want to show your support? Here are a few of the other fundraising events taking place in aid of student scholarships.

Staff litter picking

The Big Litter Pick – Friday 21 June 2019, 12-2pm

Are you passionate about the environment and looking for a unique fundraising method?

Join the Big Litter Pick as a team or as an individual, you don’t have to be a Big Walker to get involved. It’s open to all but we hope walkers will see it as a fundraising initiative. You will be allocated an area on campus to pick to ensure multiple areas are being covered. There may even be a prize for the team who picks the most!

You may have seen #trashtag on social media recently, which is a hashtag encouraging people to pick up litter in their local areas and post before and after photos. Whilst we hope there isn’t that much rubbish around campus it will highlight the impact that clearing up rubbish can have on our surroundings, and how much litter can build up without us noticing.

If you’d like to get involved, head down to the DARE office between 12 noon – 2pm on Friday 21 June to collect a litter picker, hi-vis jacket and bin bag and start collecting! You can pick for half an hour, an hour or however long you like.

Share your photos with us @sheffunistaff @SheffieldAlumni using #trashtag

The quiz will be hosted by Peter Wright from the HR Department, and can be tailor made to suit the needs of the team, with a mixture of up to five rounds. Start and finish times can be arranged. Peter is an experienced quiz master and was once voted the 26th best quiz master in the Doncaster area.

The Big Row – Friday 28 June 2019Louise Johnson on rower

On Friday 28 June, Louise Johnson and Paul O’Neill from our School of Languages and Cultures will be rowing 37 miles each in the Diamond to raise as much money as possible for Sheffield Scholarships.

Louise said: "I really wanted to have a go at the Big Walk, but given distinctly dodgy ankles, I came up with an altogether more painful idea: why not row 37 miles on a Concept 2 indoor rower instead?! No scenery to look at, and as much a mental test as physical!

"Both Paul and I benefited from scholarships of different kinds when we were students. They made all the difference to our degree, and as it turned out, to our careers. Please help if you can, and be the difference that helps young people realise their potential at Sheffield."

Louise and Paul are hoping to raise at least £1,000 for Sheffield Scholarships. They will be located in the exhibition space in the Diamond from around 9am on Friday 28 June. Come along to show your support, help cheer them on and donate on the day.

Big Walk poetry competition – closing date Tuesday 2 July 2019

Have you walked through the beautiful scenery of the Peak District on your training walks, taken in the surroundings and wanted to put it into words? Here’s your chance to do exactly that!

Debbie Beaumont-Thomas from DARE has put together a poetry competition, to mark her and her husband’s fifth Big Walk. Whilst on a training walk this year covering part of the route in the spring sunshine, Debbie heard birdsong, smelt the wild garlic, and saw the last of the bluebells. From this came her own poem as a call to arms to all other Big Walkers:Debbie and her husband walking

Scholarships are this Big Walk’s cause
They’re great ‘cos they help open doors
So get out your purse
And send us your verse
And a wonderful prize could be yours!

If you’re interested send over your Big Walk-related poem – limerick, haiku, blank verse, sonnet – whatever you like! Poems can be submitted by emailing

Closing date for entries is 5pm on Tuesday 2 July 2019. This will give you a chance to spend part of Big Walk day coming up with poems with your fellow walkers/volunteers!

Please consider making a donation, suggested minimum of £2, to Debbie’s Just Giving page and please mention POEM in your donation message. Tell us if you’re not happy for your name(s) to be published if you win.
