Christmas and New Year closure days in 2017

Firth Court at Christmas

It has been agreed that this year's Christmas and New Year closures will be as follows:
Friday 22 December at 6pm - the vast majority of University buildings will close at this time and re-open on at 8am on Tuesday 2 January 2018. The Diamond will close at 10pm on Sunday 24 December and re-open at 8am on Tuesday 2 January 2018.

Monday 25 and Tuesday 26 of December are Bank Holidays. Wednesday 27, Thursday 28 and Friday 29 December are closure days. Monday 1 January 2018 is a Bank Holiday.

The only University building which will remain open over the holiday period is the Information Commons (IC), which will be open 24/7 throughout. However, following discussions with the Students' Union officers and analysis of usage last year over the holiday period, only the ground and first floors will remain open during the following times:

  • 24 December 2017 - 10pm to 7am
  • 25 December - 10pm to 7am
  • 26 December -10pm to 7am
  • 31 December - 10pm to 7am
  • 1 January 2018 - 10pm to 7am

This limited access will allow us to ensure that we are saving as much energy as possible whilst still providing a good service to those students who use the IC building over the holiday period.

Any staff requiring out of hours access to support essential research activities during the Christmas break must advise their Departmental Manager or Laboratory Superintendent, and provide their name and details of the building they wish to gain access to.

All information must then be forwarded to the University's Security Supervisor Team (securitysupervisors@sheffield.ac.uk) by Friday 16 December 2017, who will in turn brief colleagues within the Security Control of authorised access.

All essential staff requiring access must have already completed out of hours training and departments are strongly advised to complete risk assessments for the activities that are being undertaken.

Details of any exceptions and changes to services during this period can be found here.
