Your chance to work abroad with Erasmus+
Recently, we have been celebrating how our University has benefited from Erasmus+ over the last 30 years. Now it’s your opportunity to see how the programme can benefit you and your career.
Applications for the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility scheme are now open for the 2017/18 academic year. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for both academic and administrative staff to experience working abroad. You can choose a programme from two days to two months in a range of partner institutions across Europe. You can also apply for funding from European Commission for travel and other costs during your time abroad.

Our staff who have experienced the programme cannot say enough about the enormous benefits they have had from working abroad. You gain new experiences and insight to help improve your skills and opportunities. You share good practice and expand your horizons, all the while making key contacts with colleagues from other countries. Outside the workplace you will get to know another culture, meet people from all over the world and experience what life is like in another country.
Teaching mobility – academic staff
Taking part in the Erasmus+ Teaching Mobility programme allows you to step out of your comfort zone and deliver teaching in one of our European partner universities. The experience of teaching abroad can offer a unique insight into the education practices of other countries, and new perspectives on your own methods. You may even forge new research contacts and pick up future opportunities to teach and share your research abroad.
Placements can range from two days to two months, and the European Commission offers funding for travel and other costs. Participating staff deliver at least eight hours’ teaching per week in their chosen department.
Professor Sue Vice, from our School of English Literature, Language and Linguistics said of her visit:
“My Erasmus+ visits have led to some exciting opportunities. I was asked to peer review an article, invited to take part in a conference and I made some great contacts at the institutions I visited.”
Staff training mobility – professional staff
The programme is also open to our staff working in professional departments. You’ll get the opportunity to work in a department that complements your role in Sheffield, gaining valuable knowledge and new perspectives, and sharing ideas with international colleagues. The programme is a brilliant way to challenge yourself and add something unique to your portfolio.
Placements can range from two days to two months, and the European Commission offers funding for travel and other costs. Participating staff complete at least eight hours’ work per week in their chosen department.
Tracy Wray, Director of HR & Communications, spent two days in HR and Communications teams at the University of Amsterdam. She said of her visit:
“The experience is about joint sharing of good practice, learning from each other, forming networks and making international contacts - which is increasingly important. I would encourage anyone considering Erasmus+ to think about what you can give on the programme as much as what you can get out of it.”
The deadline for applications for both the Teaching Mobility and Staff Training Mobility programmes is Monday 4th December 2017.
If applications exceed the funding available, priority will be given to staff who:
- have not previously participated in the Erasmus+ Staff Mobility programme;
- would otherwise not have an opportunity for international travel;
- have a strategic agenda for undertaking the mobility;
- work in departments which operate successful and reciprocal Erasmus+ exchanges.
