Help us improve staff development

Professor Gill Valentine, Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor, introduces a review of the annual Staff Review and Development Scheme (SRDS), and explains how you can get involved.

"We are committed to supporting all colleagues to realise their potential and achieve individual, team and University goals and ambitions.

"One of the main ways to currently identify learning and development needs, review progress and discuss future plans and objectives is through the annual Staff Review and Development Scheme. However, in our most recent staff survey, 27 per cent of you said that you did not find it useful and only 55 per cent had received the training, learning and development identified in your last SRDS.

"Discussions that have taken place through the implementation of the Academic Career Pathways framework and with academic heads of department and professional services directors have also highlighted issues with the current process.

"Based on this feedback, we have established a review into the effectiveness of the current process with the aim of making sure that it is a useful tool for your development. We hope to make recommendations by the end of October 2019.

"Your input into the review is essential. As a starting point, we would like to gain a deeper understanding about what you value and what you think could be improved about the annual SRDS process. We will be running a number of focus groups through June and July where you will have an opportunity to tell us your thoughts and suggestions.

"We appreciate that not everyone will be able to make a focus group, therefore we have also set up an online questionnaire where you can input your views. This should take you no longer than five minutes to complete.

"The current SRDS process will remain the same whilst we are undertaking the review and we will keep you up to date with progress."
