This May, our University will play host to this year’s Annual Showcase event from the Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine, where you can see first-hand the latest innovations in medicine and technology developed by the institute.

The Insigneo Institute for in silico Medicine is a collaboration between our University and the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The institute pioneers research into developing sophisticated computer simulations in health and disease in order to improve clinical diagnosis and treatment.

In silico, also known as ‘computational medicine,’ holds the potential to transform healthcare and tackle complex diseases. By developing computer models, it will be possible to simulate how a disease could affect a particular patient, providing predictions on patient outcomes that are currently difficult, risky or impossible to measure directly but vital to support medical decisions. Doctors will be able to use these simulations to provide accurate predictions about the patient and their disease, dramatically improving the way they can be treated.

The Virtual Humans film was produced by the Barcelona Supercomputing Centre (BSC) and the CompBioMed H2020 Centre of Excellence in Computational Biomedicine, led by University College London with the Insigneo Institute contributing as a core partner

In silico medicine is a rapidly developing interdisciplinary research field helping to bridge the gap between engineering, medicine and science. Our University academics closely collaborate with the Sheffield Teaching Hospital NHS Trust representing the faculties of engineering, medicine, science and three hospitals.

As part of the Insigneo Institute, our University academics are developing innovative ways to apply in silico technologies and expertise to improve lives. Key research includes:

  • The VIRTUheart tool creates a computer model of the arteries supplying blood to a patient’s heart. This model can be used to help predict the most effective treatment for patients with coronary artery disease, currently the leading cause of death worldwide.
  • Research into the strength of children’s bones, which could help in the design of safer car seats.
  • The development of virtual reality colonoscopies, helping clinicians to detect abnormalities in the digestive system.
  • Contributions to the NIHR Sheffield Biomedical Research Centre where modelling techniques are being applied to support assessments of neuro-motor function. The Insigneo researchers will combine sensor information with MRI images of the musculo-skeletal system to build virtual patients.
  • Our University is also leading the way in training a new generation of scientists to use computerised techniques to improve disease diagnosis and treatment in the healthcare sector through Insigneo’s revolutionary MSc in Computational Medicine.
