My Sustainable Print recognised for sustainability & value for money
As our academic colleagues attend the UN Climate Change Conference to discuss reducing global carbon emissions, we’re taking a look at sustainability here on campus and celebrating a new award for My Sustainable Print (MSP).
The project is the winner of a new annual Value for Money award presented by our University Audit Committee for projects and initiatives that are innovative, deliver long-term sustainability and that are linked to our University strategy.
Janine Barraclough and Kath Winter from CiCS collected the value for money award trophy on behalf of the University-wide project team.
Janine said: “By replacing the original staff printing service with MSP we have eliminated a great deal of waste.”
“Waste in efficiency with the need to support so many different printer types, waste in paper with so many uncollected prints, waste in energy with so many printers on for 8 hours per day but in use for only a few minutes per day.”
Kath added: “MSP has also delivered business benefits giving the whole University equal access to enterprise level print, scan and copy facilities.”
“It has reduced annual carbon emissions relating to printing from 24 tonnes to five tonnes – that’s a reduction of 19 tonnes or 79 per cent. It has also delivered financial benefits, realising savings of £1.6million since its implementation in April 2014.” she explained.
And the project continues to develop as Janine explained: “We continue to introduce new features such as printing from mobiles and we’re investigating optical character recognition to scan text and the ability to scan directly to Google.”
The Audit Committee selected a winner from feedback in the annual report to University Council outlining achievements in securing value for money. The report includes evidence from committees, faculties and departments
Helen Dingle, Director of Finance, said: “Our annual report delivers a summary of the many achievements made throughout the University in delivering Value for Money in the acquisition and use of our resources. We look forward to continuing to build on this award in future years as we continue to firmly demonstrate our achievements in this area."
