Coming soon: New parent room

A parent room for nursing mothers will soon be opening on central campus. To help decorate the new room, we're running a competition to ask for your favourite parenting quotes.

The new room will be located in the Alfred Denny Building and will be open to all members of the University community. It will provide a designated space to express or breastfeed in a private location and has been developed by the Faculty of Science Equality. Diversity and Inclusion Committee in response to feedback from staff and students.

The parent room, which is secured by a keypad lock, has a nursing chair where mothers can breastfeed or express milk, as well as a sink area and a kettle. There are also two lockable fridges which are solely for the storage of expressed milk and can be used on a first-come-first-served basis.

Professor Katherine Linehan, Faculty Director for Equality, Diversity and Inclusion, said: “We are very excited to open our new parent room to meet the needs of our staff and students and create a more inclusive working environment. This is a very valuable facility for both Science and the wider University.

“Returning to work after having a baby can be challenging for all sorts of reasons and we hope this facility goes a little way to supporting parents and making the transition period a little easier.”

Further details, including how to book the room, will be available soon.

Competition

To mark the opening of the new room we are running a competition to ask for your favourite parenting quotes which will be used to help decorate the room and help make parents returning to work feel part of a supportive and inclusive community.

Please email your favourite quote to clare.parkin@sheffield.ac.uk by 31 March 2020. Three entries will be picked at random to win a £10 Amazon voucher.
