Off the Shelf festival of words - ideas alive at 5:45

We are looking for speakers to take part in the ideas alive at 5:45 series, which is part of Off the Shelf festival of words.

Ideas Alive at 5:45 is a series of ten free public talks publicised within the Off the Shelf programme, 10-31 October 2020. It is a prestigious opportunity to engage publics with your research in a short talk and question and answer session. Events are well attended and all events are supported and led by a member of the public engagement team.

Topics

We encourage applications from all faculties and the talks will be represent the diversity of research at the University. As Off the Shelf is a literary festival, we would encourage your talk to be based on a recent book or publication.

Format

  • 45 minute talk with 15 minutes of questions and discussion
  • There is provision for powerpoint slides but not for films or audio
  • The format is not suitable for panel discussions.

Events normally take place off campus, and these have previously been Ambulo (Millennium Gallery) and Cafe W (Waterstones, Orchard Sq). At the moment, we are planning for a physical festival to take place but would also like speakers to prepare for the potential that this may become an online event. Selected speakers will need to prepare a podcast and presentation to cover both eventualities.

If you are interested in taking part please complete the short form by 5pm on Friday 5 June 2020.
