Programme Level Approach

2019–20 priorities and new resources

Deputy Vice-Presidents for Education, Brendan Stone and Jackie Marsh, thank you for your ongoing support of Programme Level Approach, give an update on progress and provide details of priorities for 2019–20.

Dear colleagues

As we approach the end of the academic year, we’d like to take the opportunity to thank you for your ongoing support of Programme Level Approach, provide you with an update of progress and details of our priorities for 2019–20.

Programme Level Approach (PLA) is a University strategic objective which enables us to deliver our learning and teaching ambition and address a number of internal and external challenges. PLA is about taking a holistic approach to our academic programmes and viewing them from the perspective of our students. It is an opportunity for closer team working, reducing staff and student workload pressures and improving our content, assessment and structure of programmes.

The focus for the past year has been to review and improve assessment and feedback and student engagement activities. Departments have made significant progress towards this and will continue to implement plans developed in this area and work to engage students in a meaningful way.

The priorities for departments in 2019–20, as agreed by UEB, focus on employability, inclusivity and sustainability. In developing these priorities, the Vice-President for Education, Professor Wyn Morgan, and deputies have considered the progress of departments in adopting PLA alongside other institutional priorities including the Education for Sustainable Development strategy and Race Equality Strategy and Action Plan.

To support departments with the development of their thinking, planning and adoption of Programme Level Approach we have:

  • Launched a staff google site with information and case studies
  • Developed new PLA resources and reflective questions
  • Provided reflective questions for the 2019–20 priorities
  • Introduced PLA information sessions, available to all staff
  • Made the 2019–20 priorities the focus of the next Learning and Teaching Conference in January 2020
  • Started to embed PLA events within Elevate – our Learning and Teaching Academy

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us directly or email pla@sheffield.ac.uk

Best wishes

Brendan Stone and Jackie Marsh
