New role for our Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor
I am proud to announce that our Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West has been appointed the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham. Professor West will take up the post in October 2017.
Shearer was the first person to hold the position of Provost here at the University and has worked closely with me in a shared effort to strengthen our University’s reputation for innovation and international partnerships while delivering internationally-leading research and teaching.
I am delighted and proud that UK higher education will gain such an able and inspiring vice-chancellor. Working with Shearer has been a great pleasure. In her time here she has consistently shown herself to be an exceptional leader who thinks deeply about the challenges we face and works closely with others to deliver change.
I have every confidence that she will make a superb Vice-Chancellor of the University of Nottingham, a fellow Russell Group university with whom we share the common values of excellence in research and teaching, and a commitment to working internationally. I am greatly looking forward to continuing to work with Shearer as a highly-respected colleague and friend, and wish her all the very best in this wonderful new role.
Over the past two years as Provost, Professor West has led an ambitious and successful programme of change to enhance our scholarship. This programme will continue as planned to secure our excellent teaching and world-leading research.
Shearer said: “I am honoured to be appointed to the role of Vice-Chancellor at the University of Nottingham and I am deeply grateful to everyone I have worked with here at Sheffield. I leave this University with the greatest respect for academic and professional colleagues, and a deep admiration for the University’s values and spirit of innovation. I have no doubt that we will continue to work together for the good of students and the UK in the future.”
I will work closely with Professor West to seek a new Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
I am sure you will wish to join me in congratulating Shearer and wishing her all the very best in her new role.
