Changes to senior leadership team and structure

University Council has recently approved a number of changes to the senior leadership team and structure of the University.

Firth Court

Vice-President for Research and Vice-President for Innovation

The role of Vice-President for Research and Innovation will be split into two distinct positions: Vice-President for Innovation and Vice-President for Research.

The Vice-President for Innovation will provide strategic leadership to the University's innovation, knowledge exchange, KEF and regional engagement agendas. The Vice-President for Research will lead on the University’s research activity, including research excellence, the flagship institutes, REF preparations, grant activity and impact.

Professor Dave Petley will take on the role of Vice-President for Innovation and we will shortly start an external recruitment process for the post of Vice-President for Research. In the meantime, Professor Petley will continue to provide leadership on all aspects of research and innovation, including the important preparations for REF 2021.

Executive Director of Corporate Services

As you may know, our Chief Operating Officer Andy Dodman has now left the University. Instead of directly replacing that position, we will be recruiting an Executive Director of Corporate Services who will report to the Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Interim line management arrangements are currently in place and we will shortly be recruiting to the new role.

The Executive Director of Corporate Services will provide leadership to all corporate service departments, including Human Resources, Corporate Communications, Development, Alumni Relations and Events, Health and Safety, Sport Sheffield and the Vice-Chancellor’s Office.

Corporate Services will also now include Estates and Facilities Management and Corporate Information and Computing Services.

To reflect these changes, our current Director of Academic Services, Rob Sykes, will see a change of job title to Executive Director of Academic Services. Rob will continue to look after Library Services, Research Services, Planning and Insight, Student Recruitment and Admissions, Student Support Services, Academic Programmes and Student Engagement, the English Language Teaching Centre and the Strategic Change Office. Global Engagement, and Partnerships and Regional Engagement will move under Academic Services.

Our Chief Financial Officer will continue to provide leadership to Finance and Accommodation and Commercial Services.

We will also be extending the model of academic oversight of professional services departments that currently works well in a number of departments. Each professional service department will have a named academic lead who will provide strategic oversight and act as the UEB sponsor or co-sponsor for strategic projects, working closely with the Executive Director of Corporate or Academic Services.
