Showcasing the achievements of our academic community

Throughout the last year, our University Library has been gathering nominations from staff, students and alumni for books by our academic community that have inspired, motivated or informed.

The Sheffield Authors Showcase honours the achievements of our academic community, by celebrating their contribution to academic endeavour and by recognising the effect that their scholarly works have had on their readers.

Professor Ronald Illingworth

The latest featured author in the Sheffield Authors Showcase is Professor Ronald Illingworth, a pioneer in both the teaching, and practice, of paediatrics.

In 1947, he was appointed the first Chair of Child Health at our University. By the time he retired in 1975, Professor Illingworth had built an outstanding centre of excellence with an international reputation.

Professor Illingworth had a remarkable flair for both the spoken and written word, which made him an inspirational teacher.

Some of his many publications include:

  • The Normal Child (1953, ten editions)
  • The Development of the Infant and Young Child (1960, nine editions)
  • Common Symptoms of Disease in Children (1967, nine editions)
