Professor Steve Armes FRS awarded Royal Society Prize

Steven ArmesCongratulations to Professor Steve Armes FRS, Professor of Polymer and Colloid Chemistry, who has been awarded the Armourers & Brasiers' Company Prize 2018 by the Royal Society.

The Armourers & Brasiers' Prize has the principal aim of recognising materials research that is both fundamental, and also use-inspired, for the benefit of society. Professor Armes was awarded the prize for his pioneering development of colloidal nanocomposite particles. He has demonstrated many applications; his fruitful collaborations with companies has inspired three successful commercial products. He receives £2,000 and a silver gilt medal.

Professor Armes said: "I am delighted to be awarded this prestigious prize. My group has worked in the field of colloidal nanocomposite particles since 1990 and it is very gratifying to see that our fundamental research has been translated into commercial products by three different companies.

Moreover, these products are quite diverse – BASF has developed a durable dirt-shedding exterior architectural paint, Cabot has designed tough new spacer particles for laser toners and DSM has produced nanostructured anti-reflective coatings used to boost the efficiency of more than 200 million solar cell modules."
