A warm welcome to the University
A huge welcome to our new colleagues who have recently joined the University. Whether you’re new to Sheffield or just new to the University, we hope you’re settling in well.
President and Vice-Chancellor, Professor Koen Lamberts, recently hosted our Welcome to the University event for new colleagues. It was an opportunity for recent new starters to find out more about the University and to hear directly from Professor Lamberts and senior colleagues about where we are, as well as ask questions in a panel discussion.
New short video giving an introduction to our University:
Opening the event, Professor Koen Lamberts said: “I’ve been at the University for just over a year now and I have been deeply impressed by the world-leading work happening here, and the commitment and dedication of colleagues across the University. Ours is a community made up of over 8,000 staff and 29,000 students from around 150 countries and I hope that today you have had a chance to meet people from other areas of the University.”
Professor Brendan Stone, Deputy Vice-President for Education, spoke about the work we are doing around student experience, and Ian Wright, Deputy Director of HR, gave colleagues an overview of opportunities available as a member of staff.
We spoke to some of our new colleagues to hear what they thought of the welcome event
“I’ve been at the University for three weeks. I was in Chicago before as a postdoctoral researcher and I wanted to come back to Europe and I got a good opportunity here in Sheffield. It’s been a really interesting day with lots of useful information. I really liked the interaction with Professor Lamberts giving an overview of the research activities here, it’s very motivating as a new member.”
Sergio Vernuccio. Lecturer, Chemical Engineering
“I’ve been at the University for just under a month, I started at the beginning of October. I came to Sheffield because of a project, I’m here with the Wellcome Trust fund doing research in pulmonary hypertension and there’s a huge collaboration with Royal Hallamshire Hospital. It’s been really good, everybody’s been really nice. It’s been an adjustment, I’m from the States originally, so I’ve been learning. It was nice to hear the vision and the whole scope, instead of just departmental stuff that I got on my first day here. I really liked the question and answer part of the session, and hearing other people’s questions that were the same as mine about the mentoring.”
Johanna Uthoff. Postdoctoral Researcher, Computer Science
As well as networking with other new starters and colleagues from across the University, colleagues were able to browse a number of University stalls, outlining the benefits and services available to staff. These included Staff Development, Open@TUoS staff network, Parents@TUoS staff network, Sport Sheffield, Green Impact, Digital Learning, Elevate, BAME staff network, LGBT+ staff network, UCU, UNISON, UNITE, Student Services Information Desk (SSiD), Print and Design, The Deal, Events (DARE) and Accommodation & Commercial Services.
