Mrs Lesley Bruce
Lesley’s work has been instrumental in transforming cancer research at the University into an internationally-leading discipline. Following an illustrious career of over 40 years at the University, Lesley retired from her position as Research Delivery Manager for Cancer Research in August 2016.
Lesley became lab manager for the newly established Institute of Cancer Studies in the 1990s after several years as a technician in the Department of Medicine. Under Lesley’s leadership, the work of the institute went from strength to strength, participating in important clinical trials and working alongside the Academic Unit of Clinical Oncology.
In her role as business manager, Lesley drove the development of the Unit and its world-class research. As its success grew, she combined her work with the position of manager of the North Trent Cancer Research Network, giving South Yorkshire and North-East Derbyshire access to clinical trials. In 2014, the network evolved into the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR) Clinical Research Network, and Lesley was appointed research delivery manager for its cancer division, directing groundbreaking cancer research across the entire Yorkshire and Humber region.
Lesley’s colleagues said: “Lesley has helped to shape the face of cancer research in Sheffield and the Yorkshire and Humber area. She is undoubtedly a remarkable woman who is responsible for our reputation in cancer research and improvements for patients.”
