Professor J. Cheryl Exum
Cheryl is a feminist biblical scholar whose work is internationally renowned. She holds the title of Emeritus Professor within the discipline of Religion, Theology and the Bible following an illustrious career at the University of Sheffield. In 2015 she was awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Uppsala in recognition of her contributions to the field of Biblical Studies.
As Director of the University’s Centre for the Study of the Bible in the Modern World, Cheryl became widely recognised as a pioneering research leader. Along with two colleagues, she founded Sheffield Phoenix Press during this time, now a leading publisher in the field of Biblical Studies.
Cheryl’s expertise and outstanding leadership led her to be distinguished with a number of high-profile positions. She was President of the Society for Old Testament Study in 2010. For over 10 years, she served as Executive Editor of the journal Biblical Interpretation, leading it to become one of the most prominent journals in the field. Currently, Cheryl is a consulting editor of the Dictionary of Classical Hebrew.
