#BeBoldForChange: stand up for each other
Emily Ansell, Student Transitions and Support
Nominated by Paul Rodgers, Head of Student Transitions and Support
"Emily is the driving force in the University's work combatting sexual harassment and assault on campus. Sexual violence can affect anyone but the sad fact is that female students are more likely to be the victims and survivors than their male counterparts.
"Emily has been instrumental in a number of initiatives as well as providing support to students affected by sexual violence. Emily helped to establish the University's Sexual Violence Working Group.
"This year she oversaw the delivery of nearly 440 consent/bystander conversations to more than 2500 students in our University residences. Emily developed the content of the conversations, recruited and trained student champions and Resident Mentors who delivered the conversations, and oversaw the practicalities such as timetabling, room booking and trouble shooting.
"She also acted as a point of contact for any welfare concerns that emerged from the conversations.
"The bystander interventions approach encourages members of our community to be active bystanders by speaking out, reporting and supporting those affected by various types of violence, including bullying, sexual harassment, and sexual assault.
"Emily has created an online disclosure form, developed guidance for staff and produced materials for training and to raise awareness. Her passion to encourage the University to get to grips with this issue has led her to collaborate with Sheffield Rape and Sexual Abuse Centre and Sheffield's Sexual Assault Referral Centre."
