LorraineProfessor Lorraine Maltby, Animal and Plant Sciences

Nominated by Professor Julie Gray, Department of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology

"Professor Maltby is an important role model and advocate for gender equality in our organisation. She successfully led our recent application to become one of the elite group of universities with Athena SWAN Silver institution award status, demonstrating a significant achievement by the University in promoting gender equality.

"In 2008, Professor Maltby took the courageous step of becoming the first ever female Head of the Department of Animal and Plant Sciences. In addition to being an outstanding ecologist, and an award-winning teacher, Lorraine has served on several key committees, including University Council and Senate.

"She is currently the inaugural Chair of the University’s Gender Equality Committee. In this role Lorraine has initiated projects to investigate and address institutional culture change, the gender pay gap, female leadership, career progression and talent attraction. Few could work harder to ensure that women achieve their full potential at the University of Sheffield."
