#BeBoldForChange: challenge stereotypes
Dr Sharron Hinchliff, School of Nursing & Midwifery
"I have carried out research into gender and health for more than 20 years, and during this time I've had the opportunity to challenge many stereotypes that women face during the course of their lives.
"The bulk of my work has focused on older women, and I have been able to identify the ways that stereotypes affect the healthcare they receive, and provide a counter-discourse to public and medical discourses that show traces of ageism and sexism.
"My motivation is a passion for equality and a desire to make a difference. I have published for academic, clinical, and lay audiences, and worked with journalists, ensuring that when they write about older women they do not reinforce the same tired stereotypes we often find in the British press.
"Social media is excellent for activism, and has helped me to develop strong connections with others who are working to forge a more inclusive, gender equal world."
