Message from our Provost and Deputy Vice-Chancellor
"I am proud of what the University of Sheffield has accomplished for women who are part of the University community. I am a member of a University Executive Board that is 40 per cent female, in a University where 51 per cent of our overall staff and 37 per cent of our academic staff are women. The University has achieved Athena SWAN silver status, with all STEM departments, as well as Archaeology, now holding Athena SWAN awards.
"To inspire and support our women colleagues, we have mentoring programmes at every career stage, with almost 200 academic women having participated in our Impact and Futures mentoring programmes to date. Our Women Academic Returners (WARP) programme supports women who are returning to work after time off for maternity leave, and since 2006 the 136 women supported by £1.7 million of WARP awards have consequently brought in over £12.5 million in apportioned research grant income to the University. In addition, both the Women@TUoS and Women Professors network offer opportunities for women in the University to share ideas, concerns and aspirations.
"However, there is much more we could still accomplish, and the University is committed to this year’s IWD theme of #BeBoldForChange. We are undertaking innovative work through our Diversity by Design pilot and through a reconsideration of our University career structures, to ensure that we make new efforts to enable talented women across the University to make a full contribution and thrive."
