Media Unit Manager in the Sheffield School of Architecture
"I’m the Media Unit Manager in the Sheffield School of Architecture (SSOA). The Media Unit supports both students and staff in architecture as well as collaborating with others across our University community. My role involves managing the service and interactions with students and working with academics to develop new ways of teaching and learning in the architecture discipline. At the moment we are experimenting with 360 degree capture and virtual reality for example.
"As well as loaning a wide range of equipment to students, we also have some architecture-specific technologies such as an artificial sky and heliodon. These technologies allow students to simulate light levels in different climatic environments.
"Within SSOA there are seven technicians and we are part of a larger technical team headed by the facilities manager. We work together to develop our specialist areas, and on big events like the summer exhibition.
"What I most enjoy about my role is the independence and the head space to develop ideas as well as the opportunity to collaborate on projects across the University."
