University themes

As you know, it is a time of great challenge for the higher education sector and we are committed to remaining a globally-leading university and a top employer that offers excellent teaching and world-leading research.

Using what you said in the 2016 staff survey is a real opportunity to help make change happen and build a sustainable future for our University. And during times of challenge it is even more important that you feel inspired and able to do your best work.

Provost & Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Shearer West and Chief Operating Officer Andrew Dodman have worked with colleagues in UEB to structure the University-level actions around four themes. This will help us improve on the areas you were most concerned about and celebrate those things you said you feel proud of.

It will also support our core objectives and contribute to organisational success, meaning that we can use what you said in the staff survey to support organisational change.

Helping you see your place in the big picture

STRATEGIC NARRATIVE

I would like to see a more visible strategy in terms of research, both at a local and department level and University wide.

Knowing where our University has come from and where it's going and being able to see the big picture and your place in it can bring meaning and purpose to your working life.

Empowering leaders to bring out the best in people

LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT

[I would like] more transparency at all levels throughout the institution.
[I want to see] more trust and empowerment.

2016 STAFF SURVEY FREE TEXT COMMENTs

This is all about how we give leaders and managers clear objectives linked to the University’s purpose, keeping them informed of the bigger picture. And how managers agree clear objectives and show their staff how their work contributes to the University’s objectives, coaching and bringing out the best in people.

Making sure your voice is heard and listened to

ENGAGING PEOPLE IN CHANGE

Effective change requires consultation with the relevant staff.

This theme is about how we create platforms for dialogue and feedback at department, faculty and University level, providing opportunities for you to contribute your expertise, experiences and ideas. And how we promote knowledge sharing and collaboration and demonstrate that opinions count.

Giving you reasons to feel proud to work here

CELEBRATION AND ADVOCACY

You get a real sense that the University values its employees. This in turn makes me a want to do a good job and I feel a sense of loyalty to the organisation, working towards what it is trying to achieve overall.
