Get ready for Global Entrepreneurship Week with USE
University of Sheffield Enterprise are getting ready for Global Entrepreneurship Week - the nation’s largest entrepreneurship-focused campaign - and we want you to be a part of it.
This global week runs from 17-23 November and will be encouraging current and aspiring entrepreneurs to take a step forward in their plans – whether that’s starting a business, seizing a new opportunity or finding out more about careers in enterprise.
We’re kicking things off in style on 17 November with The Social Innovation Lab Celebration Evening, a fancy, formal presentation evening to celebrate the innovative projects and social entrepreneurs who have grown out of the Social Innovation Lab.
Over the last four weeks, 48 students have worked in teams to develop seven different business proposals for new social enterprises, hoping to realise their potential and create something that could make a real, positive social change.
On the night, each team will present their business proposals to a panel of judges. Similar to Dragons' Den, the teams will be expected to pitch their idea, present a supporting video and answer questions from the "dragons” in order to compete for a range of prizes.
On Thursday 20 November, we’ve teamed up with Give it a Go to bring you the Pizza Party, a chance for you to munch on pizza whilst developing your business skills through a business simulation game.
During the game you will work in teams to run your own pizzeria competitively against three other teams. You will have to look at location, your pricing strategy, marketing strategy and really think who your target market is. This is a great opportunity to develop your commercial awareness, giving you an insight into the world of business and helping you improve your budgeting skills. Plus, the winning team will win a pizza related prize.
This activity is open to all and can really help non business specialists to get to grips with basic business concepts in a really interesting and fun way. It starts at 4pm in the Octagon Council Chambers. Tickets are £3 including pizza and nibbles.
The main event, however, is Startup Weekend. Running from 21-23 November, Startup Weekend is a hackathon style event with an entrepreneurial twist that’s open to absolutely everybody. It’s a crazy 54 hours for Sheffield’s amateur or professional coders, designers and entrepreneurs to build tech solutions to the world’s problems.
The weekend is all about experiential learning, relationship building, and competition. It is centred on solving real problems for real people and so the businesses that grow out of these events are ones which address customer need.
Competitors will present their projects to a panel of judges on the Sunday evening and the winners will be announced.
And it’s not just Sheffield taking part – more than 200 Startup Weekends will be hosted around the world as the first round of the Global Startup Battle.
Global Startup Battle is the largest startup competition in the world, aiming to generate a stronger global community of entrepreneurs.
Winning teams from each Startup Weekend will go on to compete with one another in the Champions category of the Global Startup Battle via a global video competition.
There are also plenty other categories which anybody who competes in a Startup Weekend can enter. Prizes are intended to help Startups be successful and include mentoring, launch opportunities and trips to entrepreneurial havens such as Silicon Valley, Eureka Park and New York.
Last year’s Startup Weekend Sheffield winners, Airstoc, made it to the semi-finals of the Champions category of Global Startup Battle 2013 while competitors, Goodvid.io, got to the finals of the Innovators category. Both have continued trading as successful startup businesses.
We’re crossing our fingers that this year there’ll be a Sheffield World Champion!
